Dear Internet
There’s this word you keep meaning to use but you just can’t seem to get the hang of it, and that word is “complement.” Get in the game, internet!
Anyway I didn’t come here to tell you that, I came here to say that I read somewhere that David Byrne added the little a cappella choral intro thing to “Road to Nowhere” because the song itself was basically just one note and he was embarrassed about it and felt the need to add some flair up top to prove he still had the chops.
This fun-fact keeps popping into my head these days thanks to my latest non-paying career: “joke writer.” I get insecure about a particular line and feel the need to adorn it with smoke and mirrors. Or maybe even call attention to the fact that I know it’s bad, beating you to the punch.
Sometimes it’s OK because you end up with something superdense that has like four jokes for the price of none, but sometimes it’s more like smearing makeup on your kid’s face before sending them out for their little dance recital, desperately trying to cover up their tears of dread.
